I had an amazing experience at on the Aerospace Corporation Field Trip. My mom works at the Aerospace Corporation, so it was fun for me to be able to get a tour of the site that she works in. I also participated in a simulated rocket launch in a mission control room, which was a unique experience.
Scientists at the Aerospace Corporation are working on a Lithium-ion Battery Deorbiter. The idea uses the occurrence of thermal runaway in Lithium-ion batteries to generate thrust to lower a satellite's orbit enough for it to burn up in the atmosphere. This method of removing a satellite from orbit has the advantage of not requiring the addition of weight or hardware.
